Ethnobotany Tungmunnithum, Duangjai [1], Hano, Christophe [2]. Traditional uses, Palynological, and Anatomical Characterization of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. with Its In vitro and In cellulo Antioxidant Potentials. Bau Luang or the so-called Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. is an aquatic perennial plant in Nelumbonaceae family, mainly distributes in Asia. This medicinal plant has long been used as one of the major ingredient for Asian traditional medicines e.g. traditional Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Korean and Thai traditional medicines and so forth. In Thailand, the stamens of N. nucifera is a necessary component for preparing Thai traditional medicines or herbal formulas as well as herbal teas to improve the circulatory system and retain healthy condition. Local people in many locations of Thailand produce and sell the tea from dried stamens of N. nucifera as local products. However, there are another aquatic flowering plant species that shares the closely vernacular name: Bau Sai that have also the similar distribution as N. nucifera . Indeed, the scientific name of Bau Sai is Nymphaea lotus L. which can be discriminated from Bau Luang by using the morphology of living plant. Nevertheless, the dried plant especially stamens of these 2 species are difficult to confirmed. Thus, there are some misused and adulteration from this plant in herbal medicines or products made by N. nucifera stamens. This study aim to characterized palynological, and anatomical characterization of N. nucifera as well as provide the new inside into in vitro and in cellulo antioxidant potentials of this plant species as the fundamental ideas for future studies and applications. Our study pointed out that the palynological evidence from pollens can be effectively used to discriminate the dried stamens between these 2 problematic species. Furthermore, this medicinal plant exhibited interesting antioxidant potentials both in vitro level using DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays and in cellulo using yeast model.
