Local adaptation in herbaceous perennials of the Southeastern Coastal Plain.

An understanding of local adaptation in plant populations can play a crucial role in predicting how populations will respond to environmental change, and to determining the success or failure of ecosystem restorations. We sampled populations of three herbaceous perennials across a small portion of the Southeastern Coastal Plain: Lespedeza capitata, Solidago odora, and Tephrosia virginiana. We collected DNA from four individuals per population for at least nine populations of each species, then performed a RADseq experiment and assembled loci de novo. We then used a landscape genomics approach to test for correlation between genetic differentiation and environmental differences among populations. Climatic gradients among collection sites were narrow, with ranges of only 2.5 °C in mean annual temperature and 20 cm in mean annual precipitation. However, for all three species, differences in temperature and precipitation among collection sites were correlated with genetic differentiation among populations at potentially adaptive loci suggesting that populations are adapted to local climates. Local adaptation should be considered in conservation efforts, even within relatively small geographic areas.
