Origin of Stellera chamaejasme (Thymelaeaceae) on the Korean Peninsula.

Stellera chamaejasme L. is a toxic perennial herb that has potential as a new drug for anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and cutaneous wound-healing purposes. This plant can be found in open and dry places, such as grasslands and meadows in Bhutan, Nepal, northern China, Mongolia, the Russian Far East, and Korea. Stellera chamaejasme is locally common throughout its range, except in Korea, where small populations are found only near the volcanic cones on the eastern part of Jejudo Island. It has remained unclear as to whether it was introduced during the Mongolian invasion of Korea in the 13th century or whether it is a relict population survived on the island. To understand the origin of S. chamaejasme, we developed microsatellite markers selected from next-generation sequence data. A total of 114 individuals from Jejudo Island (single population), Mongolia (three populations), and Inner Mongolia of China (two populations) were examined. The Jejudo Island population of S. chamaejasme showed low levels of genetic diversity at all loci. In contrast, mainland populations from Mongolia and China contain moderate to high levels of genetic diversity. The composition of the alleles in the Jejudo population was a subset of the Inner Mongolian populations with no unique alleles for Jejudo. A principal coordinates analysis showed that individuals of Jejudo were grouped with Inner Mongolian individuals. These results suggest that the Jejudo population of S. chamaejasme is closely related to Inner Mongolian individuals and may have arrived by means of anthropogenic introduction.
