Generation gaps: Improving resolution at the tribal scale in the Gochnatieae (Compositae) with low-cost phylogenomic tools.

The Gochnatieae is comprised of more than 100 species restricted to the tropical and subtropical Americas. Despite clear taxonomic boundaries among genera in the genus and strong support for monophyly of the tribe and the genera that belong to it, resolution of generic relationships remains poor. The tribe occupies an important position for understanding biogeography and trait evolution in the Compositae, yet to date traditional molecular markers have not provided sufficient resolution to test diversification hypotheses in the tribe. We mirrored sampling from a 2014 study that utilized a handful of common molecular markers used for Sanger Sequencing and sequenced 72 putative low-copy nuclear loci to test the utility of these markers for shallow scale species phylgenomics and – if possible – explore relationships among the genera comprised in Gochnatieae. Not only do these loci improve resolution among genera, but they also prove informative at the species level and are informative, revealing new concepts of evolutionary and taxonomic significance.
