Conference Wide Jomsky, Jordan [1], Ekwealor, Jenna [1]. Interdisciplinary outreach through botanical data. Big data has become the platform of the Information Age. The maintenance and manipulation of large datasets has unlocked the potential of research in academia. In biology, vast datasets are generated that are perfect for those who are interested in data science. Specifically, in botanical data, there is a wide array of data cleaning exercises, data visualizations, and exceptional opportunity for both botanists and data scientists to benefit. As the subject of data science proliferates in colleges around the country, it is a great opportunity for the biological sciences to leverage the drive of inspiring data scientists. As an undergraduate data scientist working in a plant biology lab, I have been uniquely positioned to be able to apply my skills to our research project to create unique analyses of botanical data. I have learned more about the field than I would have in a more data science focused environment by the application of my education. Data science is, in short, the study of data as well as its manipulation and analysis through the techniques of computer science and statistics. With its power, geospatial and statistical visualizations can be created to greatly improve the communication and impact of botanical studies. I will be going over three specific visualizations that can be generated through advanced data science packages for Pythons: radar-bar chart hybrids, geographical data with pie graphs, and stacked bar graphs. These visualizations have great potential for much of biological research. With this discussion, I will be going over the best practices for data science and biology with respect to undergraduates as well as data visualizations that I have created for my research as an undergraduate at the Mishler Lab at the University of California, Berkeley Log in to add this item to your schedule
