An Ethnomedicinal Plant: Mimusops Elengi L.

Mimusops elengi L. (Sapotaceae) is an ayurvedic plant with potential curative properties. It is used as folklore medicine in various traditional systems. Tribal peoples use decoction of leaves for cleansing mouth to prevent and cure disease of gum and teeth. Paste of leaves is applied on wounds for healing. Decoction of bark is used to cure uterus problem, ripe fruits are used in treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery. The smoke of the flower is used for treatment of asthma. The plant has been scrutinized for different biological activities to confirm its traditional uses. Scientifically it has been proved that plant parts possess antidiabetic, antipyretic, analgesic, antitumor, antiurease, anti-anxiety, anticonvulsant, antityrosinase, hepatoprotective, anthelmintic, antiulcer, cognitive activity.
