Ethnomedicinal And Therapeutic Aspects Of Underutilized Aquatic Herb: Sagittaria Sagittifolia L. (Arrowhead).

Sagittaria sagittifolia L. commonly known as Newsa and arrowhead - an edible semiaquatic macrophyte growing near ponds, lakes, shoreline and wet ditches of North Eastern Terai Region of U.P. India. In traditional medicine system Sagittaria sagittifolia L. (Arrowhead), is well organized for its therapeutic values. Its medicinal aspects have been awarded by scientist and researchers. This plant is commonly used by local people for various purposes as food, vegetable and medicine. The nutritious tuber is used in India as well as in Chinese traditional medicine system to provide alternative therapy for the treatment of many ailment and diseases. The plant has been used in traditional medicine system for the relief of many skin diseases, inflammation, back pain and also reported as Antiseptic, Anti-inflammatory, Antimicrobial, Antioxidant, Immunomodulator, Diuretic, Antiscarbutic and Antibacterial activities. The important therapeutic properties of S. sagittifolia are mostly correlated to the existence of phytochemical. Due to being widespread and the easy collection of this plant and also remarkable biological activities this plant has become a medicinal plant in pharmacy.
