Soil seed bank and seasonal dynamics in five different physiognomies in Akure forest reserve, Ondo state, NIGERIA.

The study investigated the seasonal dynamics of the soil seed bank in five different physiognomies in Akure Forest Reserve, Ondo State, Nigeria. The Forest Reserve was demarcated into five (5) study sites, namely; A, B, C, D, E. Site A is a Natural forest, B is a Teak plantation, C is a Taungya system, D is Taungya + Teak + Gmelina while site E is Teak + Gmelina +Pinus Plantation. Two plots measuring 25m ×25m from each of the five physiognomies were selected for sampling during the dry and rainy seasons. In each plot, five replicate soil samples were randomly collected in the dry and rainy seasons to a depth of 0-15cm and were monitored for seedling emergence tests for six (6) months in each season to determine their percentage contribution to the seed bank. Analysis of variance was used to compare seedling emergence in all the physiognomies seasonally. Results showed that seedling emergence was higher during the dry season than the rainy season with the Natural Forest having the lowest mean seed bank density. Seed bank was dominated by herbaceous species in all the five study physiognomies in both season soil collections. There was significant difference in the soil seed bank density in all the five study physiognomies seasonally when analysis of variance was applied (p˂0.05) indicating variations in the soil seed bank density in all the five physiognomies.
