Palo Santo Expedition: Report from the Tropical Dry Forests of Peru.

This poster summarizes the preliminary findings of my field expedition to collect palo santo (Bursera graveolens) from the tropical dry forests of Peru. Tropical dry forests are considered one of the most endangered ecosystems, with less than 10% of the original extent remaining in many countries. In Peru in particular less than 5% of the original extent remains intact, with only about 5% of this remaining extent protected. My research examines the population genetics and phylogeography of the widespread dry forest species palo santo to test biogeographic hypotheses regarding the formation of the dry forest on a continental scale and examine fine-scale population genetic variation across its range. I collected palo santo from across the Equatorial Dry Forest, which covers Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, and La Libertad regions in Peru, and the Inter-Andean Valley Dry Forest in the Maranon River valley. In addition, I collected samples from reforestation efforts in the Tumbes and Piura regions to examine the conservation genetics of palo santo.
