Evolution of the true blueberries: a phylogenomic, cytogenetic, and morphological investigation into the reticulate polyploid clade, Vaccinium section Cyanococcus. Vaccinium sect. Cyanococcus (the true blueberries) includes ca. 9–16 species endemic to North America. A ubiquitous aspect of heathlands and acidophilic plant communities, as well as a food source for wildlife and humans, these taxa are of immense ecological and economic value. However, despite (and perhaps because of) its economic importance, Cyanococcus has suffered from a lack of basic systematic study of natural populations. Here we present preliminary results of phylogeny and polyploidy estimation and discuss future directions for disentangling the complex, reticulate evolutionary history of the group.
