Analysis of Morphological and Genotypic Variation Among Populations of Lactuca hirsuta var. sanguinea.

Lactuca hirsuta var. sanguinea Muhl. ex Nutt., commonly known as wild, hairy lettuce, is considered endangered with the only recent documentations being within the state of Massachusetts. The largest known populations have been found growing on Nantucket island. During the summer of 2018, five populations were discovered on Nantucket and morphological measurements were collected along with seeds and leaf tissue from a little over 100 individuals. These data were then used to construct a principle components analysis (PCA) of the morphological variation among individuals, and chloroplast primers as well as nuclear primers were used to distinguish genetic variation among individuals. This data can inform local conservation management groups of rare or uncommon allelic variation within the populations so that money and effort can be allocated more efficiently towards protecting the variation of the species on the island. The populations harboring this variation can be isolated and subsequently protected from human interaction, predation, or any other potential harm.
