Secondary Agriscience Teaching Modules Developed through iLEARN Workshop.

Immersive Learning Experiences And Rural Networking (ILEARN) is a teachers' professional development workshop funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, and created by interdisciplinary faculty at South Dakota State University. The major goal of the IlEARN workshop is to bring secondary science and agriculture educators together to develop teaching modules based on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for teaching climate science in the classrooms. The authors organized a 3-day ILEARN workshop in the summers of 2017 and 2018, and immersed 41 participants to explore best practices in teaching climate change issues and solutions. Several university faculty scientists were involved in developing the lessons each year, and many of them have established a successful networking and collaboration with the school science/Ag educators. While the majority of the participant teachers represented public schools, we had also teachers representing both private and tribal schools. The teachers collaborated with their peers and with the university scientists to develop teaching modules for implementing in their classrooms the semesters following the workshop. Some of the teaching modules are under review or already published in "ILEARN Teaching Resources"(https://openprairie.sdstate.edu/usda-ilearn_resources/) published by Open Prairie, an open access institutional repository of South Dakota State University. We will discuss accomplishments and scopes of the iLEARN workshop at our presentation.
