Diversification rates across lineages: how does biological meaning differ across model-based approaches?

Recent methodological advances have greatly improved our ability to study the variation in diversification rates across lineages. However, to date, no study has systematically compared the results of different model-based approaches for estimating branch specific diversification rates on empirical datasets. Here, we present preliminary data on our reanalysis of 20 recent studies to determine if theoretical and statistical differences in these models result in meaningful differences in the biological interpretation of results. We compare BAMM, the Lineage-Specific Birth-Death-Shift Process implemented in RevBayes, the Missing State-dependent Speciation and Extinction model (MiSSE), and a Multi-State Birth-Death model implemented in BEAST2 to probe possible biases across methods that attempt to reliably estimate diversification rate variation.
