Cytogeography and systematics of the goldback and silverback ferns (Pentagramma, Pteridaceae).

Pentagramma (Pteridaceae, Cheilanthoideae), the goldback or silverback ferns, are a xeric-adapted Western North American genus with six recognized diploid species and an unknown number of allo- and autopolyploids. The genus ranges from southwest British Columbia to Baja Sur, and has disjunct populations in Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. Goldback and silverback ferns are named for the yellow to white farina (powdery bioflavonoid-rich exudate) produced by glandular trichomes on the abaxial—and sometimes adaxial—surface of the leaves; the farina is thought to protect against desiccation and UV radiation and is an important character in separating the recognized taxa. This talk will cover updates to the cytogeography in the genus and highlight the morphological and biochemical characters used to differentiate the lineages. Additionally, preliminary data on the association between genome size and spore size in the genus will be presented.
