Questioning Species and Species Complexes: A Colloquium in Honor of Dr. R. James Hickey Link-Perez, Melanie [1]. From Hickeyites to Link-Perezians: uncovering surprising complexities in the fern genus Adiantopsis. The collection of an “unusual specimen” of Adiantopsis by R. James Hickey and colleagues during a 2001 collection trip in Argentina initiated a series of investigations into this neotropical fern genus, beginning in the Hickey lab and continuing today in the Link-Perez lab. In this presentation, I’ll recount the story of this research journey, emphasizing the scientific methodology and “reciprocal illumination” that has underpinned our progress in understanding the evolutionary history and diversification of Adiantopsis. We have uncovered previously-overlooked species, discerned complex biogeographical patterns, and expanded and clarified the circumscription of the genus. Currently, we are exploring reticulate evolution using low-copy nuclear genes. Early results suggest that diversification within Adiantopsis has included far more hybridization and polyploidy than ever anticipated. We’ll discuss what is next in Adiantopsis research and how we plan to test the hypotheses that are emerging. Log in to add this item to your schedule
