There are difficulties in the taxonomy of members of the genus Cucurbita in Nigeria. This study seeks to clarify some of these issues, therefore comparative studies of the vegetative organ (stems) of four landraces of the genus Cucurbita (C. pepo, C. moschata, C. maxima and C. agyosperma) were carried out. Transverse sections of the stems were cut using Reichect sliding microtone at 8-10um. Cut sections were preserved in 70% ethanol, staining was done with Acacian blue and counter stained with Safranin O. Stained sections were passed through serial grades of ethanol. Section were observed with light microscope. Photomicrographs were taken with 3013 ACCU-Scope trinocular microscope with digital camera. There were similarities and differences in the arrangement and distribution of layers of cells and tissues in the organ studied. The taxonomic importance of the anatomical features such as cortical bundles, presence/absence of piths and numbers of layers of cells and tissues were discussed. More gaps need to be filled with the taxonomy of the landraces by exploring electrophoresis study and DNA makers in the genus. Log in to add this item to your schedule
