Questioning Species and Species Complexes: A Colloquium in Honor of Dr. R. James Hickey

Small, Randall [1].

Origins of tetraploid lineages in Hibiscus section Furcaria, Malvaceae.

Hibiscus section Furcaria (Malvaceae) includes several hundred species distributed pantropically, with major centers of diversity in Africa, Australia, and the New World. Despite its species richness, the section includes only ten extant diploid (n = 18) species, nine of which are African, and one in Central America. In addition to the diploid species there is a series of allopolyploid lineages ranging from tetraploid to decaploid. Most of the extant diploid species, and several allopolyploid species have previously been cytogenetically characterized and placed into “genome groups” based on chromosome pairing behavior in interspecific F1 hybrids, however these groups have not been tested phylogenetically. Using sequence data from a suite of chloroplast and nuclear loci the phylogenetic relationships among the diploid species have been analyzed. Origins of the allotetraploid lineages were assessed by sequencing homoeologous loci from the tetraploids and including them in phylogenetic analyses with the diploid species. Chloroplast sequences were used to infer maternal parents. These analyses confirm allopolyploid origins and genome groups for most lineages and identify the parental diploid species.
