Evaluating the circumscription of varieties of the Seaside fiddleneck Amsinckia spectabilis (Boraginaceae) using morphometric analyses of fruit characters.

Amsinckia spectabilis Fish. & C.A. Mey. (Boraginaceae) or Seaside Fiddleneck grows in coastal environments with sandy soil from British Columbia, CA to Baja California, MX and on seven of the eight California Channel Islands. Previously, island populations of A. spectabilis have been recognized as var. sancti-nicolai (Eastw.) I.M. Johnst. This taxon is not accepted in modern floras, but no previous study has investigated fruit characters of this potential variety.
In this study we use morphometric analyses to evaluate whether the island A. spectabilis can be distinguished from the mainland populations, supporting the recognition of a separate taxon on the islands. We sampled specimens collected from the California Channel Islands and mainland specimens that ranged from Sonoma County, CA to San Diego County, CA. We measured 26 nutlet features, and used a principal components analysis to examine nutlet features. Based on preliminary results from ordination of the data, the nutlet characters do appear to vary between island and mainland A. spectabilis. While there is significant overlap in the scatterplot of the PC1 and PC2, there are notable non-overlapping portions that suggest morphological differences, particularly in PC2. Characters that load strongly on PC2 include the length of the lateral, medial, and abaxial keels, as well as attachment scar depth. Based on these findings, future work will utilize a larger sample size and include other morphological, vegetative features of A. spectabilis.
