The genetic basis of hybrid novelty in monkeyflowers (Mimulus).

Research on hybrid speciation reveals that combining divergent genomes can yield surprising, novel traits not observed in either parent. Such traits can contribute substantially to evolution in natural populations, and provide an opportunity to explore the effects of inter-genomic interactions on developmental complexity. One emerging system for investigating hybrid novelty is Petal Lobe Anthocyanin (PLA) pigmentation in the luteus group of the monkeyflower genus Mimulus. Study species Mimulus cupreus and M. luteus var. variegatus have solid-colored flowers, yet patterning in their F1 and F2 hybrids is dazzlingly intricate. The goal of this study is to determine the genomic basis of hybrid novelty and the genetic architecture of complex pattern formation in plants. The hybrid-specific pigmentation patterns are too intricate to quantify using standard approaches. Instead, we developed and used a digital image analysis pipeline to quantify spatial patterns. Next, we genetically mapped the traits via high-throughput sequencing and used the results to test hypotheses about the genetic architecture of hybrid-specific color patterning. This project offers a uniquely powerful system for achieving an understanding of the genetic basis of hybrid novelty and the molecular mechanisms of intergenomic interactions.
