The phylogeny and biogeography of the genus Errazurizia (Fabaceae: Amorpheae).

The legume genus Errazurizia is comprised of four species of aromatic shrubs: the narrow endemics E. multifoliolata of Chile, E. rotundata of northern Arizona, and E. benthamii of Baja California Sur; and the more widespread E. megacarpa of Sonora and Baja California. Prior studies (McMahon & Hufford, 2004; Straub & Doyle, 2014) found the three species of North American Errazurizia to not be monophyletic. While the two Mexico species form a clade, E. rotundata of Arizona may be more closely related to Parryella and Amorpha. The type species, E. multifoliolata, has not been included in previous molecular studies. In this study, we clarified the phylogeny of Errazurizia and relationships to sister taxa using taxonomically informative regions of the chloroplast genome and nuclear ribosomal DNA using Next-Generation Sequencing. In addition to the four species of Errazurizia we included representatives of genera within the Amorpheae, including Eysenhardtia, Amorpha, and the two monotypic genera Parryella and Apoplanesia. These results resolve the taxonomic ambiguity of Errazurizia found in previous studies and elucidate evolutionary relationships within these genera of Amorpheae.
