Relationship between the Soil Seed Bank and Extant Vegetation of Ibodi Monkey Forest, Ibodi, Southwestern Nigeria.

This study examined the relationship between the soil seed bank and extant vegetation of Ibodi Monkey Forest, Nigeria. Three distinct physiognomies (Natural regrowth forest, Cocoa plantation and Tree fallow) designated as A, B and C respectively were identified within the study area. Seven sample plots, each measuring 25 m x 25 m were selected from the three different physiognomies. Total enumeration of the floristic composition of each of the sample plot was done and all the plants of the varying habits were identified to species level. Five replicates soil samples were randomly collected during the dry and rainy seasons at two different depths, 0-15 cm (topsoil) and 15-30 cm (subsoil), and monitored for seedling emergence (for a period of six months). Appropriate Statistical analysis were used to explain the various relationships existing between the soil seed bank and floristic composition of the extant vegetation. A total of 205 species were recognized in both the extant vegetation and soil seed bank. Nineteen species (9.3%) were common to both extant vegetation and soil seed bank, 144 species (70.2%) were common to extant vegetation while 42 species (20.5%) were common to soil seed bank. Sorenson index of similarity revealed a low similarity (8.77% - 29.4%) in species composition between the extant vegetation and the soil seed bank but was however, highest in site B (Cocoa plantation). Herbaceous species dominated the seed bank of the three physiognomies when compared to other life forms. Few woody species emerged from the soil seed bank of the three physiognomies in the two seasons. This indicates that the potential for vegetation restoration of Ibodi Monkey Forest from the soil seed bank after disturbance may not be achievable.
