Capturing California’s Flowers at the Beach: Herbarium Specimen Imaging at Long Beach State (LOB).

The Long Beach State Herbarium (LOB) in Long Beach, California was established in 1949 and contains approximately 18,000 specimens. Our mission is to collect representative specimens of the Southern California flora, to preserve and protect historical and recent specimens collected by faculty, MS students, and undergraduates, and make the specimens and their information accessible to researchers. From 2015-2018 label data from approximately 6,000 specimens were databased. In 2019 we joined the California Phenology Project, a collaboration between 22 herbaria across California in order to document flowering timing in California's flora. The project provides an online database, The Consortium of California Herbaria (CCH2) website, that allows each herbarium to share searchable specimen images and label data with the global research community. At the Long Beach State Herbarium, the Undergraduate Herbarium Collections manager trains student volunteers to database and image specimens. From January-March, 2019 the 18 imaging personnel imaged 4437 specimens at an average rate of 54 images per hour. As the images are processed, they are added to CCH2, the label information is databased, and the locality is georeferenced. By imaging our relatively small collection we have filled in species distribution gaps and made new discoveries. One example is Tetracoccus dioicus Parry (Picrodendraceae, California Native Plant Society Rare Plant Ranking 1B.2), a rare shrub with a distribution centered in San Diego County and Baja, California. Before the LOB collection was imaged there was a single record known from Orange County (F.Wylies.n. 1948, RSA41794, SD42981). LOB contributed a previously unknown specimen of T. dioicus (P.C. Baker 7018from Orange County, extending its record there by 23 years. By contributing specimen data and images to the CCH2 online database we are setting the stage for a better understanding of the history and future of the California flora.
