Evaluation of early growth performance Bauhinia monandra, Delonix regia and Tetrapleura tetraptera (Leguminous Tree Species) in crude oil-contaminated soils .

This study investigates the early growth performance of Bauhinia monandra, Delonix regia and Tetrapleura tetraptera (Leguminous Tree Species) (LTS) on crude oil-contaminated soil. It covered assessment of different levels of contamination (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 ml in 4000 g soil; which represents the degree of light crude oil spillage concentration as 0.0, 0.63, 1.25, 1.88 and 2.5 %v/w) on the growth performance. Seedling height, seedling girth, number of leaves was measured following standard protocols. Result showed that at 0ml, 50 and 100ml the height were 114.20cm, 78.90cm and 55.36cm, respectively; girth were 1.10cm, 0.70cm and 0.44cm, respectively; and number of leaves were 23.00, 13.00 and 6.00 respectively (for D. regia), height were 91.26cm, 61.10cm and 51.32cm, respectively; girth were 0.88cm, 0.54cm and 0.42cm respectively; and number of leaves were 14.00, 6.00 and 4.00 respectively (for B. monandra), and height were 21.16cm, 16.80cm and 13.90cm respectively; 0.40cm, 0.30cm and 0.16cm respectively; and number of leaves were 9.00, 7.00cm and 3.00cm respectively (for T. tetraptera) at 16 Week after planting. The effectiveness of the 3 LTS for phytoremediation were in the order; D. regia > B. monandra > T. tetraptera. Results revealed percentage germination, seedling height, seedling girth and number of leaves decreased as the concentrations of crude oil in soil samples increased at P<0.05. The tendency of the LTS plants under study suggests that they are promising for crude oil remediation in soil.
