Winter drought effects on Ratibida pinnata reproductive ecology.

Temperate plant reproductive biology can be impacted by events such as climate change. In this study, the reproductive success of a Missouri native plant, Ratibida pinnata, is determined by comparing milder winters with low precipitation and more intense summers. Pollinator observations, pollen loads and seed viability were measured to determine current main pollinators and pollination success in drought and non-drought years. We found morphological changes occur along with a shift from Bombus to Halictidae pollination in drought years. There is also lower reproductive success in the average percent of viable seeds. Further collection is needed to determine long-term effects.
