Biodiversity Informatics & Herbarium Digitization

Restructuring the LSU Herbaria after doubling in size.

The Shirley C. Tucker Herbarium at Louisiana State University (LSU) is a well-established natural history collection comprising ca. 400k plant, lichen, and fungal specimens, with particularly strong representation in the flora of the Gulf South broadly and southern Louisiana specifically. It is the largest and most active herbarium in the state, houses Louisiana's only searchable comprehensive online database, and boasts 655 type specimens. The majority of the LSU's growth in the last five years— which has climbed from 185k in 2015 to ca. 400k currently— has come from the accrual of state herbaria divested from their institutions. These number seven in total, notably including Tulane University (120k). LSU is also partnered with the Botanical Research Institute of Texas to repatriate 60k (or 13%) of University of Louisiana-Monroe's 470k collection. Including all recently acquired collections, LSU has a comprehensive collection of the flora of Louisiana, including representation of geographical areas that were not well-represented in the original collection, especially of northern and western Louisiana. In this poster, we will present recent milestones in integrating these herbaria, including structuring our digitization pipeline, developing a workflow to accession new collections into our digital and physical collections, and integrating the multiple collections into a single infrastructure.
