Dynamics and Demography of Alpine Islands

Assessing alpine vegetation community shifts in the Sierra Nevada of California.

As temperatures continue to rise (IPCC 2007), species in high alpine environments are thought to be increasingly at risk (Parmesan 2006,). However, recent studies have found mixed results.  For example, some studies detected a decrease in species diversity (Walker et al. 2006) whereas others, a significant increase (Steinbauer et al. 2018). Evidence of alpine community shifts in functional traits has also been mixed (Alexander et al. 2018) and may depend on the interaction of temperature and moisture changes. We are currently resurveying 201 vegetation plots established ca. 30 years ago in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park in the southern Sierra Nevada, California. We will assess change in alpine vegetation species’ richness, abundance and functional trait diversity. Preliminary results from 40 resurvey plots will be presented.
