Cellular differentiation leading to Aniosphylly in Boerhavia (Nyctaginaceae).

In a paper published last year, the second author demonstrated that the petiole lengths in Boerhavia diffusa and B. erecta (Nyctaginaceae) approximate the Golden Ratio. The publication identified one of the first instances of the Golden Ratio exhibited as a line segment in plant architecture rather than as an angle as is typically demonstrated in plant species with spirally arranged leaves. In a continuation of this research, we sought to identify if cell size or cell number determines the size disparity in the opposite pairs of leaves exhibited by the anisophyllous Boerhavia. Using both light and scanning electron microscopy, we examined the leaf epidermal cells of the opposite pairs of leaves in Boerhavia diffusa and B. erecta to determine which of the two mechanisms is driving the difference in leaf size.
