Pedaliaceae: Source of Nutritious and Medicinal Indigenous Vegetables with Underutilized Status in Nigeria.

Pedaliaceae family is popular for sheltering high quality oil producing crops, that is most characterized by mucilaginous leaves of high medicinal and taxonomic importance. Although, typically found growing in waste lands, road sides and wild, its species are represented in West Africa and particularly, Nigeria. Martynia, Pedalium, Rogeria, Sesamum and Ceratotheca species offer more than their present status as weed, abandoned or underutilized plants. This study therefore aimed at reviewing, the various importance with special focus on the less known, untapped nutritive and medicinal values of the family pedaliaceae members represented in Nigeria within. The importance of the species as food and medicine are discussed. The members of this family contain essential nutrients in carbohydrate, proteins, oils, vitamins, minerals and also rich in both micro and macro elements important for animals and man. The high presence of phytochemical constituents could be attributed to various diseases such as malaria, cancer, hypertension, diabetes, dermatitis, urinogenital and nervous disorders, ulcer among others. These various importance add credence to the invaluable assets still locked within the plants. The family could also be noted to contain plants with proven potentials as anti-fertility drugs in Pedalium murex and Martynia annua and fertility enhancer or aphrodisiac in Sesamum indicum and Ceratotheca sesamoides. The present conservative status of the species within the country is disturbing as the use and domestication are fast depleting. Urgent action towards arresting these threats; geared at ensuring the preservation and conservation of this highly economical, nutritious, medicinal and valuable taxonomic family is therefore recommended.
