Ethno-Medicinal and Pharmaceutical uses of Trapa natans var. bispinosa (Roxb.) Makino.

Trapa natans var. bispinosa (Roxb.) Makino is widely used as food in India. It has both nutritional and medicinal value in day to day life.Trapa is commonly known as water chestnut and singhara ,floating annual aquatic plant commercially cultivated for its edible fruits belongs to family Trapaceae.It is grown in shallow water fields,ponds or swampy lands .The International Sysetm of medicines shows use of leave,stem and seeds or whole plant in medicinal purposes. Dreid kernel is used in bleeding disorders and threatened abortion.Fruits are used in many Ayurvedic preparations  such as nutrient, appetizer, astringent, diuretic, aphrodisiac ,tonic and cooling agent.The medicinal value and nutritional quality of fruits and their plant parts were analyzed.Results show that Trapa can be a good  wheel of life as a nutraceutical.
