Phylogenomics Skibicki, Sam [1]. Systematics of Sanvitalia and Future Phylogenetics of Subtribe Zinniinae. Zinniinae (Asteraceae: Heliantheae), a New World endemic, is a subtribe made up of seven genera and around 54 species. Some prominent members include the ethnobotanically important Echinacea, the charismatic Heliopsis and Zinnia, and the amphiequitorial Sanvitalia. As a master’s student at Northern Arizona University I used ITS sequences and three plastid markers to formulate a hypothesis of the species tree for Sanvitalia, uncovering two distinct clades in the genus and a long-distance dispersal event leading to vicariant speciation. As a 2nd year PhD student at West Virginia University I plan to use targeted sequence capture and next gen sequencing to create a phylogenetic tree of the entire Zinniinae. This will open avenues to studying the biogeography and cytological trends at the subtribal level as the traits involved with arid adaptation and chromosome numbers are mapped onto the phylogenetic tree.
