Educating for a Diverse and Inclusive Community in Botany DePass, Anthony [1], Outlaw, Shanta [2], Chubin, Daryl [3]. Increasing Diversity in STEM: Bridging Practice and Scholarship. Agencies, organizations, and institutions have recognized the need to diversify the scientific workforce, and dedicated significant time, money, and effort to achieving equity in representation in STEM training and careers for many decades. However, indicators of success have been mixed. Programs aimed at diversifying the scientific workforce have lacked the empirical, hypothesis-driven basis that form the foundation of training in the STEM disciplines. Although considerable research in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences regarding achieving equity in education and professional training has been published, much of this research remains inaccessible because of the difficulties in distilling and disseminating the scholarship in ways that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Understanding Interventions that Broaden Participation in Science, with support from many public and private federal, state, and local institutions, has organized eleven national conferences that communicate effective strategies from successful STEM intervention programs, present results from empirical research studies, synthesize the translation of research findings into practice on STEM learning, undergraduate research, graduate education, and student retention, and facilitate relationships between practitioners and researchers, who may be discipline driven in ways not necessarily congruent with the needs of practice. that broaden participation in STEM.
