"Sex on the Kitchen Table": an outreach experiment.

While a small and vocal fraction of Americans are "science deniers", the vast majority are eager to learn more about science. After writing a "successful" scholarly book to inform GMO policy that sold fewer than 500 copies in over a decade, the speaker conducted an experiment to see if he could reach a larger audience by writing a science book that straddled the scholarly and the popular. The experiment, "Sex on the Kitchen Table" is a science "trade" book that examines the sex behind the crops that feed humanity. The speaker briefly presents the history of the book and how it is structured. Both the control and the experiment were published by university presses. The pathway to publication was similar for both. The post-publication response was dramatically different. Within three months of publication, the experiment outsold the control. The final statement is a call to the audience to embrace their role in feeding scientific literacy. Given the large number of published authors in the audience, ample time for Q+A will be provided.
