Anatomy of a soapberry forest from the lower San Pedro, Arizona.

We are in the process of collecting natural and cultural history data on Sapindus saponaria (Sapindaceae), a widely distributed deciduous tree-shrub in the New World tropics and subtropics. Of particular interest in our study is a relatively large and concentrated population of over 5,000 soapberry stems, putatively clonal, and forming a monotypic canopy within a mature mesquite bosque forest in the lower San Pedro River valley, Arizona. The property is currently owned by Resolution Copper and being managed by the Nature Conservancy. Funding this research was provided by Resolution Copper.
