Genetic diversity and structure in Australian endemic Cycas.

Twenty-seven species of Cycas are recognized in Australia. All are endemic and most of them occur in eucalypt and rain forests in tropical and subtropical regions. Three of the more widely distributed species in the group, C. mediaC. ophiolitica, and C. megacarpa inhabit forests in eastern Queensland. We have sampled multiple individuals from different populations of these species, including populations that show extensive phenotypic intergradation. We are using a reduced-representation genome approach based on restriction site associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq), to understand genetic structure and diversity and to test potential interspecific hybridization. Given that polyploidy is rare in extant gymnosperms, the role of hybridization in the evolutionary history of the group may be underestimated. Here we present our forthcoming results on the genomic makeup of Cycas populations and its implications on the evolutionary history of the group.
