Comparative phylogeographic methods to inform conservation of endemic Pedicularis (Orobanchaceae) in the Hengduan Mountains of China.

The Hengduan Mountains region of southwest China is a temperate biodiversity hotspot characterized by high rates of endemism, including approximately 300 endemic species of Pedicularis. Isolation in allopatry has likely contributed to high rates of plant speciation. However, infrastructure development in recent decades has substantially altered connectivity of this landscape -- connecting previously isolated areas by roads and tunnels -- with the potential to threaten endemic biodiversity with genetic homogenization. We are using comparative phylogeographic methods to reconstruct the history of divergence and gene flow among multiple widespread species of Pedicularis to identify major barriers that have contributed to rapid speciation processes. We will then compare contemporary and historical (~20 year old) specimens spanning these barriers to test whether recent gene flow has occurred across historical barriers. Here, we present preliminary results for one widespread species complex that includes P. cranolopha and P. tricolor. Using RAD-seq data we estimated a rooted phylogeny, population structure, and effective migration surfaces to characterize the history of divergence and migration in this clade.
