Describing Photosynthetic Diversity in Cultivated Sunflower.

Cultivated sunflower is the fourth most important oilseed crop globally, and exhibits large variation in phenotypes across oilseed and confectionary germplasm. With the recent publication of a reference genome for sunflower, the bottleneck for modern genomic crop improvement has shifted strongly toward understanding the complex and nuanced physiological traits that contribute to yield. Using a core set of twelve inbred lines documented to capture approximately 50% of allelic diversity across cultivated sunflower, we describe major aspects of photosynthetic physiology with a high-throughput rapid A/Ci curve approach using the CIRAS-3 portable photosynthetic system. Additionally, we describe chlorophyll fluorescence and hyperspectral reflectance data collected on both the core twelve lines as well as a larger association mapping panel of 288 inbred lines that capture approximately 90% of allelic diversity across cultivated sunflower. Using these datasets, we assess the variation in photosynthetic performance that exists across the cultivated sunflower germplasm as well as determine how well high-throughput proxies like chlorophyll fluorescence and hyperspectral fluorescence predict photosynthetic performance. Given the contribution of photosynthetic performance to plant growth and final yield, we describe the relative utility of these proxies for germplasm screening for molecular breeding approaches. Lastly, we use a set of SNP markers distributed across the sunflower genome to perform genome-wide association mapping to describe the genetic architecture of photosynthetic traits in sunflower.
