Donald J. Pinkava's legacy - the ASU Herbarium in the Sonoran Desert Pigg, Kathleen [1], Ickert-Bond, Stefanie [2]. Colloquium: Donald J. Pinkava’s legacy – the ASU Herbarium in the Sonoran Desert. We propose a half-day colloquium in honor of Professor Donald J. Pinkava (Professor Emeritus, Arizona State University, deceased July 2017). Dr. Pinkava was Director of the Arizona State University Vascular Plant Herbarium (ASU) from 1964-2000 and continued his research until his death in 2017. During his long and distinguished career, Dr. Pinkava profoundly influenced several generations of plant biologists, especially those who study the systematics of Cactaceae and the natural history and conservation of the Sonoran Desert. He was the driving force behind the development of the ASU herbarium, a leading expert on Cactaceae and Asteraceae, and a dedicated and beloved mentor and colleague. Dr. Pinkava advised over 30 graduate students who in turn documented much of the flora of Arizona, the cytogenetics of Opuntioideae and Asteraceae and broader areas of the Southwest flora. His students and colleagues continue his dedication to teaching, his meticulous attention to detail in cytogenetics, his mastery of botanical terminology and nomenclature for revisionary systematics, and, above all, his love for field biology. Dr. Pinkava's contributions to the Flora of Arizona, the Intermountain Flora, the Flora of North America, and the Flora of Cuatro Ciénegas (Mexico) are monumental achievements in their own right. His dedication to the ASU herbarium is a case study in herbarium development: the herbarium grew from 1,200 specimens at his arrival in 1964 to over 300,000 today.
