Questioning Species and Species Complexes: A Colloquium in Honor of Dr. R. James Hickey.

Polyploidy, hybridization, and other processes have yielded sometimes complex assemblages of plant species. These species complexes are favorite playgrounds for plant taxonomists and provide challenging examples to test our ideas of species boundaries and biology. Throughout his career, Dr. R. James Hickey (retired, Miami University; former Editor of the American Fern Journal) and his students have tackled multiple species complexes across the phylogeny of land plants. Using a diversity of methods—anatomical, morphological, cytological, and molecular—Jim and his students have explored and questioned the nature of species in complexes from quillworts to ferns, and even a few seed plants and bryophytes. This colloquium brings together a sampling of Jim’s former students to present their recent research and share how they are continuing to grapple with questions ranging from the delimitation of species to broader questions in the plant sciences, building on the foundation of hypothesis-testing that was a hallmark of their training in the Hickey lab.
