Pacific Biogeography Cantley, Jason [1], McDonnell, Angela [2], Harper, Stephanie [3], Branson, Jennifer [4], Kobara, Joseph [5], Luftman, Nathan [6], Martine, Christopher [7]. A new subspecies of Chenopodium (Amaranthaceae) restricted to the Hawaiian Island of Moloka‘i. From dry northwestern seacliffs of the Hawaiian Island of Moloka‘i, we describe the new subspecies Chenopodium oahuense ssp. molokaiense. The new subspecies is distinguished from C. oahuense s.l. populations elsewhere across the archipelago through its strongly prostrate to decumbent habit, thicker leaf fleshiness, smaller average leaf size, limited leaf margin lobing, and smaller seed sizes. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted from twenty-three newly sequenced C. oahuense individuals and many outgroup taxa for two DNA regions: the plastid gene rpl32-trnL and ITS1-5.85 rDNA-ITS2 nuclear region. Analyses confirmed the monophyly of C. oahuense s.l. with C. oahuense spp. molokaiense, but resolution was not able to discriminate the subspecific level nor determine the area of origin to Hawai‘i. Despite this, morphometric results suggest that Chenopodium oahuense ssp. molokaiense warrants recognition as distinct from C. oahuense s.l. elsewhere. Furthermore, salt tolerance germination trials, physiological experiments of photosynthesis, and leaf anatomy suggest active divergent evolutionary adaptation of C. oahuense, which is distributed across a wide range of environmental gradients in the Hawaiian Archipelago.
