As anthropogenic climate change accelerates shifts in species range and population structure, evaluation of current species population structure is necessary to prioritize conservation efforts. Lemhi penstemon (Penstemon lemhiensis) is a rare species endemic to eastern Idaho and western Montana. While several populations of Lemhi penstemon are known, they exhibit moderate to low population size. Additionally, the species is threatened by species encroachment through resource competition, a trend that has increased as changing fire regimes in the area have altered ecosystem structure. We used AFLP markers to assess the genetic structure within and among eight populations of P. lemhiensis. Our results were used to calculate population inbreeding coefficient, genetic diversity, and genetic differentiation (F_ST). These results will be used by the National Park Service to assay population risks, and to outline conservation management strategies for this rare species of Penstemon. Knowledge of population genetics is essential for the formulation of stringent regulatory conservation action, such as population management or reconnection of fragmented populations. Additionally, similar analysis must be implemented preemptively on plant taxa in order to avoid species reaching endangered status and increase the prospect of species recovery in an increasingly fluctuating environment.
