Species delimitation in the presence of widespread hybridization in Veronica subgenus Pseudolysimachium.

Speciation and the nature of species has been the central topic in systematic biology for centuries. Taxonomists all over the world continue to ask “what is a species?”, “how many species are there?”, and “how to identify species?”. Especially speciation by hybridization and ploidy changes has been a disputed topic when trying to understand the process of speciation in plants. These events are complex and much of this kind of diversification has occurred recently, creating examples of adaptive radiation and speciation in action. One good example for this is Veronica subg. Pseudolysimachium, which comprises about 30 species. The subgenus is characterized by a number of synapomorphic morphological characters and a distinct chromosome base number and includes horticulturally important species of the genus. It originated approximately 12 mya and diversified since 3 mya. It is considered the fastest radiating Northern Hemisphere subgenus of Veronica. Recent DNA-sequence (454-sequencing of ITS1 and Sanger sequencing of cpDNA), morphometrics and flow-cytometer-based analyses together with wide cross-compatibility found in crossing experiments have confirmed that frequent hybridization resulted in a taxonomically complex situation. Several of the about 800 taxon names have been suggested to be hybrid taxa. The present contribution tries to understand the phylogenetic relationships and patterns of hybridizations in subgenus Pseudolysimachium distributed in Eastern Ukraine and South Russia by using Genotyping-by-Sequencing (GBS). The region has the highest density of taxa due to extreme splitting but likely also due to hybridization. Here, we disentangle relationships obscured by hybridization and consider the importance of polyploidy to delimit lineages important for long term-evolutionary processes. By doing so, we also discuss the inclusion of different ploidy levels in phylogenetic analyses of GBS-data.
