Investigating speciation of Iris subgenus xiphium through phylogenomics with a biogeographic focus.

Iris subgenus xiphium are bulbous species native to southwest Europe, and northern Africa. The subgenus has 12 taxa distributed in southern France, Andorra, Spain, Portugal, and northern Algeria and Morocco. We mapped species occurrences based on herbarium specimens in public repositories and other collections. We also investigated biogeographical patterns in BioGeoBEARS using a dated phylogenetic hypothesis based on skimming and targeted sequenced markers. Ecological diversification and shifts in ecological niches were tested in a GIS framework using spatial modeling, spatial statistics, multivariate statistical methods and WorldClim and Soilgrid data. Significant environmental factors were also mapped to phylogenetic trees for comparisons across lineages. Results indicate Iris xiphium var. xiphium is widespread across Mediterranean bioclimates; whereas, the other taxa tend to be narrowly distributed in either Mediterranean or temperate bioclimates. Furthermore, early diverging lineages occur in more northern regions, while more recent clades tend to occur in northern Africa.
