Symbioses: Plant, Animal, and Microbe Interactions Irving, Mari [1], Mason, Chase [1]. Developmental Effects of Terpenes on Vanessa cardui . Secondary metabolites are a category of organic compounds produced by all plants that are not required for the organism’s growth, energy production, and reproduction. However, these unique compounds are an integral component of other functions such as pollinator attraction and defense against herbivores and pathogens. Lineage specific terpenes are hypothesized to have evolved in response to specific plant-herbivore interactions; however, there are several common terpenes present across most land plants. This study aims to characterize the toxicological effects of several terpenes and identify possible temperature dependent effects in the model herbivore Vanessa cardui. Results obtained from this study could explain seasonal variation in terpene abundance and be used to inform models of plant-insect interactions and their response to climate change.
