Testing the early burst diversification hypothesis of ecological differentiation in adaptive radiations with genus Penstemon (Plantaginaceae).

Early burst patterns of diversification have become nearly synonymous with the concept of adaptive radiation. Despite this connection, many studies using empirical phylogenies fail to recover signals of early burst diversification, even for well-known adaptive radiations. We tested the early burst hypothesis of diversification with a suite of continuous climatic and soil variables in the genus Penstemon (Plantaginaceae), a large genus of angiosperms thought to have undergone a recent adaptive radiation. Contrary to expectations, we found support for models of increasing diversification through time over early burst models, suggesting the early burst paradigm may not be an appropriate expectation for adaptive radiations.
