Phylogeny and Biogeography of the Cladrastis clade (Leguminosae: Papilonoideae).

The Cladrastis clade is an early-diverged lineage within the subfamily Papilionoideae of Leguminosae, its phylogeny and biogeography are still unclear.vwe reconstructed the phylogenies using the nuclear (ITS) and plastid DNA regions (matK, psbA-trnH and trnL-F). Specific/sectional/generic boundaries within this clade were assessed by integrating evidence from phylogenetic analyses, morphology, and multivariate ecological methods (PCA, ENM). A new tribe, Cladrastideae, is established based on the Cladrastis clade with four monophyletic groups: the Cladrastis platycarpa complex, Cladrastis s.s., Pickeringia and Styphnolobium. The C. platycarpa complex constitutes the monospecific, resurrected genus Platyosprion. The controversial "species" C. chingii, C. parvifolia, C. scandens and C. yungchunii are suggested to be treated as synonyms of Platyosprion platycarpum. Cladrastis is recircumscribed as equal to Cladrastis s.s., with three species from eastern Asia, and one species C. kentukea from eastern North America. Styphnolobium is herein classified into three sections: St. sect. Oresbios, St. sect. Styphnolobium and a new section, St. sect. Affine. Platyosprion and Cladrastis were estimated to have originated at approximately 42.37 Ma and 22.6 Ma, respectively. Pickeringia and Styphnolobium split at ca. 15.2 Ma, which may be in response to the biome shift in western North America during the middle Miocene climatic optimum.
