Search for Affordable Organic fertilizer for vegetable farming in Ile-Ife,Nigeria.

People are increasingly becoming health conscious and the clamour for organic food, especially vegetables, is increasing. There is a need to provide affordable sources of organic fertilizers to subsistence farmers. This study investigated the use of Moringa leaf, Orange and banana fruit peels as sources of organic nutrients for two leafy vegetables. The experiment was conducted in a screen house at the Department of Botany, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Nigeria. Amaranthus hybridus and Solanum scabrum plants were analyzed for the growth effect of using the above sources of nutrients as a fertilizer. Plants to which the exudates were not applied served as the control. The effect of the treatment was species and dose dependent.
