Phylogenetics of Clematis subgenus Viorna .

Clematis (Ranunculaceae) is a genus of approximately 300 species worldwide that displays a wide range of morphological variability, both among and across species. Many species have distinct morphotypes that are spatially segregated, particularly within the North American leather flowers (Clematis subgenus Viorna), which have led to morphometric studies for targeted species across the group. This study focuses on the interspecific and intraspecific relationships of the monophyletic North American subgenus Viorna, which is comprised of 21 species, with several additional European and Asian congeners. Previous systematic studies have either neglected molecular data, had incomplete taxon sampling with respect to North American taxa, or utilized few molecular markers with low variability, such as chloroplast markers and nuclear ribosomal ITS. We sequenced numerous morphotypes that represent entities being reviewed for taxonomic revision using a ddRAD approach, with a particular focus on eastern North American taxa.
