Reticulate evolution and biogeography in ferns and lycophytes - a colloquium honoring Dr. David Barrington

Ten years later: Revisiting the Myriopteris yavapensis complex (Pteridaceae) in the genomics era.

Over the past decade, technological advances have opened new avenues for probing long-standing questions in plant systematics. This is especially true for previously recalcitrant groups and reticulate species complexes. Together with tried and true approaches (e.g. chromosome counts and morphological comparisons), efficient and cost-effective techniques, such as flow cytometry and next generation sequencing, have truly revolutionized evolutionary studies of these non-model lineages. Here, in honor of David Barrington and his contributions to the study of hybridization, polyploidy, and apomixis in ferns, I revisit the Myriopteris yavapensis species complex (previously, the Cheilanthes yavapensis complex), which was first elucidated ten years ago. I share recent insights into broad-scale hybridization across the genus and discuss genome evolution in the group, highlighting the ways in which old and new data sources can be integrated to expose underlying evolutionary trends.
