Educating for a Diverse and Inclusive Community in Botany Soltis, Pamela [1]. Engaging A Diverse Biodiversity Workforce Through Natural History Collections. Despite increasing diversity in fields related to biomedicine, the botanical sciences, and especially those disciplines that encompass plant diversity, have not made similar gains. Part of the reason seems to be that ecology and evolutionary biology are outside the general experience of many young people of under-represented groups. Natural history museums - and the science behind them - represent largely untapped means for engaging students from diverse backgrounds for careers in biodiversity. I will describe efforts by iDigBio to introduce biodiversity science to a range of non-traditional audiences and the positive responses to those efforts, with suggestions for an expanded role of natural history collections, and especially herbaria, in engaging a more diverse botanical community.
