Population Genetics/Genomics Oleas, Nora [1], Linan, Alexander [2], Swift, Joel [3], Ulloa, Carmen [4], Edwards, Christine [5]. Species delimitation of Berberis (Berberidaceae) in Ecuador. Berberis, commonly known as barberry, is the largest genus in the Berberidaceae with approximately 500 species. Species diversity is highest in Asia and in the Andes of South America. In Ecuador Berberis is represented by 30 species, 16 of which are endemic. However, this is an understudied genus, as many species in Ecuador are only known from few old collections, and the number of currently accepted species may be reduced. The diversity and evolution of Berberis in Ecuador has not been studied using molecular techniques. Berberis is extremely variable morphologically, even showing differences within the same individual. We used 2b RADseq data to test whether complexity in species boundaries could be explainable by introgression among the species. Our results show evidence of introgression between species of Berberis in Ecuador, which might explain individuals showing intermedia features. Log in to add this item to your schedule
